He worked in the woods as a logger, and was a veteran of the Second World War. After the war, he worked as a full-time farmer. He was a founding member of and very active in the Maritime Ox Pulling Association, through which he won many international championship titles. He was a founding and lifetime member of Royal Canadian Legion, A.L. Patterson Branch 87, Caledonia, and member of Caledonia United Church. He was a recipient of the 50-year jewel, and was past master and past district deputy grand master of Mechanics Lodge 78, AF&AM. He was past high priest and district superintendent of Rossignol Chapter 6, Royal Arch Masons, and member of Antiquity Perceptory Knights Temple. He was a life member of Austen Bentley Council 15, Select Masters, and charter member of EBN Cochran Council 18, Select Masters, as well as a 32 degree member of Scottish Rite Masons and member of Philae Temple, Order of Nobels of Mystic Shrine. Affectionately known as Pop to his family and friends, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially salmon fishing on the rivers of Nova Scotia. He retired from Imperial Oil after 27 years of service. During his course of employment, he was engineer on the S.S. Shatford until it was retired from duty. He was a deacon at Faith Tabernacle Pentecostal Church for 20 years, a member of Alive Christian Church for 10 years and, recently, a member of New Hope Community Church, Tantallon. Friday, December 5, 1997 HEISLER, Lloyd Alton HEISLER, Lloyd Alton - 91, formerly of Indian Point, Lunenburg Co., died December 3, 1997, in Harbour View Haven Home for Special Care, Lunenburg. Born in Rous Island, off of Indian Point, he was a son of the late William Henry and Mary Helen (Langille) Heisler. He was a farmer and an inshore and dory fisherman. He was a crew member of the schooner Bluenose and had raced and fished with her between 1928-1938. During the 1920s, he started rowing in the Lunenburg double-dory races. In 1952, he and his partner, the late Russell Langille, Oakland, rowed in the first International Dory Race, held between teams from Lunenburg and Gloucester, Mass., never losing a race. In October of 1982, they were inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by his wife, the former Jennie Shay; daughter, Frances and husband William Redmond, Virginia Beach; sons, Wilfred (Sonny), Indian Point; Garnet and wife Diane, Clearland; two grandsons; four granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; six great-granddaughters; four step-great-grandchildren. Saturday, December 6, 1997 BEZANSON, Clarence David BEZANSON, Clarence David - Passed away suddenly in Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Sheet Harbour, on December 4, 1997, at the age of 92 years. He was born in New Chester, May 25, 1905, and was a lifelong member, and at the time of his death the oldest member, of the community. He was the eldest son of the late Judson and Sarah (Frost) Bezanson. He was a woodsman all of his working life, working in lumber camps in the area. He was a lover of horses, and in his younger years worked horses in the woods. He kept and trained oxen for his own use. He was foreman for New Chester Road for many years. He was an avid moose and deer hunter and sportsman. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Rilda Fulton. He was a very loving father to his only son, Gordon and wife Nina, New Chester, with whom he resided for the past four 1Ú2 years. A loving grandfather to granddaughter, Cheryl Bezanson, Dartmouth; grandsons, Philip and wife Sonya, New Chester; Jason, Dartmouth; Mervin, New Chester, and great-grandson, Devin, New Chester. Born in Owls Head Harbour, Halifax Co., he was a son of the late Reuben and Violet (Stevens) Hutt. His early years were spent in fishing, farming and forestry. At the start of the Second World War, he joined the RCAF Marine Division and served for the remainder of the war maintaining vessels in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. After the war, he returned to Owls Head Harbour and started his own business. There he built a reputation as a builder of fine wooden boats. He had customers ranging from Nassau, British West Indies, the United States and Central Canada, with the majority of his fishing boats going to Cape Breton and Nova Scotia. After his retirement from boat-building, he was active in woodworking in many ways. He was a member of the United Church of Canada for the past 56 years. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean (Stevens); daughter, Jocelyn, son-in-law, Chris Dean (Dartmouth); son, Larry, daughter-in-law, Sharon Shaw, (Bridgewater); grandchildren, Julie, Andrea, Cindy, Tracey and Andrew; brothers, Kenneth, Thomas, Byron, Robert and Edward.
